Discover César’s Art
His seawater oases and native gardens transform the coastline into a living museum that respects the essence of the Canary Islands. Jameos del Agua, the César Manrique Foundation and the Cactus Garden are essential stops that should not be missing from any stay. A body of work that has been growing alongside the island for decades.
Start Here Inside
Before you go out to discover César Manrique, you will already have found him here inside.
His works form part of the spaces at Plus Fariones. Not as decoration, but as a starting point. Because Manrique’s work does not begin in any specific museum: it is everywhere, and those who learn to recognise it change the way they see the entire island.
The Man Behind the Island
To understand why, it helps to know who he was. Manrique was born in Arrecife in 1919. He studied in Madrid, lived in New York and returned to Lanzarote in 1966 with a clear idea: that the most honest art is not the art that competes with the place where it is born, but the art that amplifies it.
That idea can be seen in each of his spaces. Mirador del Río blends into the cliff and lets the strait of La Graciosa speak for itself. Jameos del Agua turns a volcanic cave into a liveable space without touching what made it extraordinary. The Cactus Garden grows in a former lapilli quarry as if nature had arranged it that way from the very beginning.
The House Born from Lava
And then there is his home, the César Manrique Foundation in Tahíche. It does not look like a house from the outside. Nor from the inside. The rooms are born from lava bubbles. The ceilings are rock. The light enters where the rock allows it. Being inside is understanding that, for Manrique, there was no difference between living and creating.
Guests staying at Plus Fariones reach all of these places with an advantage: they already know the work, they have already felt it. And that, even if you do not notice it at the time, changes the experience completely.
Our team can guide you on what to visit and in what order. Most of his spaces are less than an hour from the hotel.
